Email Standards Project: Bring the Bling

Posted by Mathew Patterson on November 28, 2007 in Site Updates

Now that we’ve officially launched the Email Standards Project, we want to spread the word as far as we can, so the right people hear about it. Every person who believes that email standards are important needs a way to show it on their site or brochure or forehead.

We thought about creating some ‘I support Email Standards’ type badges on our own, but then it occurred to us that we had tons of talented designers who probably have some fantastic ideas for pimping the project. All of that talent should not be wasted!

So this is your chance: Create a website badge, come up with a great tagline, design a t-shirt, sticker or tattoo - be as creative as you like in coming up with something that you and other people could use to spread the word and show support for the Email Standards Project.

You can grab a copy of the logo and get cracking, just make sure to keep it positive in nature. Send your work to us by email or leave a comment on the post and we will share them here. Whether you design something yourself, or just use someone’s design on your site, your support is really valuable.

This project is fantastic and well worth the effort! Having to explain to my client why we can’t make nice e-mails in Lotus Notes, or even if we do, it won’t look the same in any other client, gets old after a while. I will be checking up regularly!

Please upload a vector version of the logo so I (and other designers using Illustrator or Inkscape) can get started on some badges and such. The png won’t translate well for different sizes and media (t-shirts, etc). Thanks!

Thanks for the kind words Doug, much appreciated. We’re working on the vector version now and will have it posted shortly. I’ll make sure I update the post as soon as it’s available.

We can’t wait to see what you guys come up with.

Dave -

So psyched to see this launch. The badge is on my <a href="http://iamyellingcanyouhearme.com>blog</a>, nothing fancy, but once I launch my business site, I do something better ... I also see T shirts in the making ;)

Thanks for the kind words guys. Snorri and Sam, the purpose of the project is to help email client developers fix the current problems with their emails clients, so we’re only focusing on the latest versions of that email client so they know where to go from here.

If you’re looking for a full rundown of CSS support for older but still popular email clients, check out this report.

It’s no secret to regular readers that I am not a fan of HTML email. For me it gets in the way of the actual message, and, in the all-too-common scenario when an HTML email is not accompanied by a plain-text version, leads to me indiscriminately deleting email without reading it. Most of the HTML email I get is spam anyway, so I doubt I’m missing much.

I’ve generally not been a fan of HTML email. The main reason is how much easier it makes phishing, link obfuscation, and other evil email scams. That said, I realize that it has a lot of good uses when employed for the forces of good. But making an HTML email that works as designed in Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, Gmail, and other email applications and services is difficult to impossible.
