Outlook 2007 doesn’t show image borders

Posted by Mathew Patterson on April 22, 2008 in Email Client News

When we heard from Carl that "Word/Outlook 2007 HTML rendering engine does NOT fully support border styles, despite the official documentation saying otherwise", we ran a quick test of our own. That test confirmed that border styles, either inline or in the head of a document, do not render in Outlook 2007.

image
Here is how it should look

image
This is how Outlook 2007 renders the same code

Now that we have at least made contact with Google, it looks like Microsoft should be next on the list! Your ideas and suggestions are welcome. We also love to hear from you when you discover rendering issues like these, because we like to keep our reports accurate. You can email hello at emailstandards.org or leave a comment below.

I’ve seen this problem 2 weeks ago. My (bad) solution: I’ve but the border direct in the image :-(.

Outlook 2007 doesn’t take border="1" or style="border:1px solid #000” for imgs.
We have to do this to achieve the desired result:
<div style="border:1px solid #000;"> ...img… </div>

I’ve also started having to hack the ruddy border into the image. I’ve also found that Outlook 2007 changed all the sizes of the images in my email templates that I use on my local machine for day to day business - really made my day having to change these.

Hey guys - what do you reccomend to do about this. My email guy is saying the best (by which I think he means quickest)way is to physically put the border on the image. do you guys agree?

Oh Outlook 2007!!
Microsoft really did a number with this new software. This is the first time I hear this but like other comments mentioned, it’s better to add it to the image.

Since, we are in this Outlook 2007 topic, has anyone tested or know what the consequences are of using non-web safe colors as BG colors? We have clients that love tan and light browns and the closest web safe colors are either pink or yellow.

Gross. This is one of the reasons Microsoft can be so frustrating to work with in the world of email as in the world of web development: It’s not just that they do not support many standards, it’s the fact that the standards they do “support” are frequently broken or incorrectly implemented.

Many times this can practically be worse, as you have to learn a whole new set up tricks that make your code even more incompatible. It’s almost better if they don’t support a standard then support it incorrectly.

Microsoft, please help!

This is a problem?  It think they’re doing your recipients a favour!

Like one of the posters said, just include borders in the image itself if you absolutely must.

Next you’ll be complaining about lack of support for the BLINK tag!

Seriously? What exactly are you designing?

Along these similar lines, Outlook 2007 does not appear to fully support border-bottom styling. When applying the same border bottom styling to multiple cells in a row, occasionally it starts ignoring the border.

Not sure if anyone else has noticed this or came across a fix.

I’ll also add that Outlook 2007 doesn’t seem to support padding (and possibly margins?) on images.  Developing on Linux for Outlook 2007 recipients is simply world of pain… It took me 3 days to make a single email display reasonably (a far cry from “correctly").

Posted 10:05 am on 12 June 2008 - #16

According to our email usage statistics, currently about 8% of all recipients use Outlook 2007.

@Eddie Minaya: The web-safe color palette was developed about 12 years ago, when people had computers with graphic cards and monitors, which only supported a limited color depth like 256 colors.

Borders on DIVs are pretty inconsistent, too.  A markup like <div style="border:1px solid #000000;"> will render properly about half the time, but the other half, the right border goes missing.  I haven’t figured out any kind of pattern as to when it will work and when it won’t, and it doesn’t seem to matter if the styling is inline or in the head.

I’ve found also other problems....

You write that there is a full support for line-height, but in my experience it is not.

Margins and paddings are not supported expecially with floating images.

I think Microsoft’s interests in making Word as default for email editing will be our headache in next years :-(

Posted 2:36 am on 18 July 2008 - #21

Errata: the line-height is supported in pixels (and not in ems).

I try to make border using applying styles to a div around images but it doesn’t work for me.

Hi What I want to do is for example: I market law firms via emails. So I would like
to send for example 30 emails to 30 different lawyers at same time but have each recipient
not know that he is part of a distribution group. so his email address is the only one that shows up on his email and not the other recipients. So he feels the email was only for him.

PLEASE I beg you help me.

Also since I grab my clients names at night is there any way to tell outlook to send the email at tomorrows date without showing the recipient that the night before that had I composed the email.

Having a few images on a website can make it more attractive and user-friendly. However, it is important not to go overboard, since images can take a long time to load, and in some cases can make a document harder to read.
